Swiss chard

White, yellow, red, green stalks – Swiss chard, also known as perpetual spinach, will add a bright display of colors to the garden. Chard is a frugal plant and provides regular harvests over a long period of time. This leafy vegetable, which belongs to the goosefoot family, is mainly grown in Switzerland and France. Hence the name Swiss Chard. Swiss chard is a domesticated form of sea beet and therefore a close relative of beetroot.

It can be sown directly in outdoor plots or via seedlings. Cover seeds with 2cm soil. For strong and healthy plants, thin out the seedlings to one plant per pot or to 40cm outdoors. Continuous harvesting is done from the lowest and oldest leaf stalks upwards. Care should be taken to ensure that fertilization is not too rich in nitrogen.
